2005 Willie Kissane Annual Tournament

Leicester Celtic, holders of the Willie Kissane Trophy from 2004 were again invited to partake in the annual Willie Kissane Invitation Tournament which was held over the weekend of Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August in the VEC grounds in Terenure.

The tournament is held in memory of former VEC player Willie Kissane who passed away in 1997 at the age of 36 after a long illness. Willie had been involved with the VEC since 1982.

This year as holders, Leicester Celtic were placed in the top group with teams from Terenure FC, Knocklyon and VEC ‘A’ making up the group. After the round robin of three games, Leicester emerged top of the group with results of a 2-2 draw against Terenure, a 1-1 draw against Knocklyon and a 3-2 win over VEC ‘A’.

In the semi final Leicester were drawn against Terenure College who finished runners up in Group B, with VEC ‘A’ playing the winners of group B, Balally Celtic.

In the semi final Leicester started the brighter and after 3 minutes produced the goal of the tournament when a 35-yard shot was hit high into the net of Terenure College. Leicester continued to pressure Terenure with several good moves resulting in close misses. The games finished 1-0, which positioned Leicester well for the final.

In the other semi final, VEC ‘A’ were not having it their own way with a stout performance from Balally. The game was won with a last minute winner from VEC.

In the final both teams started well with an equal share of the play in the first half. With 10 minutes to go a long ball caught the Leicester defence and the goalkeeper who had made some magnificent saves from close range in the first half was finally beaten. Leicester responded by throwing everything at VEC, but were unable to convert the final pass and came out runners up.

Afterwards, the Chairman of VEC commended all the teams who had partaken in the tournament and congratulated the two finalists who provided a very entertaining and highly competitive final, fitting to mark the memory of Willie Kissane.

Leicester Manager, Declan Ellison commented that the tournament was an excellent preparation for the new season, which sees the team who competed right through the schoolboy league from Under 11 to Under 18, moving to compete in the Leinster Senior League. “We have managed to retain the majority of last year’s squad and with the addition of a couple of new players we are looking forward to another successful season”.
